Somé contract

The Somé contract is a two-year modelling agreement worth five million, signed by Lula Landry shortly before her death. Its importance in the investigation is both practical and evidentiary: it helps explain John Bristow’s visits to Lula and supplies a concrete detail he uses to argue that her career and future prospects were strong.

Terms and Prospects

Bristow describes the agreement as a very good deal and says the designer, Guy Somé, was a close friend of Lula’s. He also links the contract to her busy schedule: Lula was booked for months ahead, with a shoot in Morocco approaching, and she enjoyed travelling. For Bristow, the contract and the work around it are evidence that Lula had reasons to look forward to her future, and therefore reasons, in his view, not to take her own life.

The Contract in Bristow’s Account

The agreement also explains why Bristow says he went to see Lula after she had instructed the building’s security not to let him past the front desk. He had reviewed the contract at her request and needed to return it so that she could sign it. Bristow presents this as the reason he went upstairs despite their strained exchange; they argued again, then the disagreement subsided.

Bristow recounts that he later saw Lula at their mother’s flat. After sitting with their mother, she went into the study where he was working to say goodbye. The contract thus recurs in his account as more than a business document: it connects an earlier visit, their renewed argument, and the last meeting he describes.

Evidence and Interpretation

The contract’s significance is limited to what Bristow says it establishes. It supports his account of why he visited Lula and contributes to his picture of her career as promising. It does not, by itself, settle what Lula felt or intended in the hours before her death; the detective remains unconvinced by the inference that an apparently bright future rules out suicide. The same document that gives Bristow’s narrative a specific, verifiable circumstance therefore also marks the boundary between evidence of Lula’s prospects and certainty about her state of mind.
